Nearby is a 130 m tall, 70 m wide Buddha image in gold, carved into the side of a hill. It is the largest Buddha image in Thailand. Khao Chee Chan, or Buddha Mountain, has an interesting history. During the Vietnam War, the Thai navy was permitted to mine the mountain for stone to be used at nearby U-Tapao Airfield, then an American base.
There are numerous Wats (temples) and there are also several mosques and churches in the area.
